The lawyer for Lucas’ mother, Catherine Faivre, told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Friday, January 12, that she had received information that there had been no administrative investigation following the suicide of the teenager, confirming initial information from Mediapart. “This tragedy shows to what extent the fight against school bullying must remain a priority for the government,” declared Pap Ndiaye, then Minister of National Education, at the time.

He announced the opening of an administrative investigation, in addition to the criminal investigation carried out by the Epinal public prosecutor’s office. Asked several times by AFP about the existence or not of such an administrative investigation within the college where Lucas was educated, the rectorate of the Nancy-Metz academy did not respond. Neither does the Ministry of National Education. As for the principal of the Louis-Armand de Golbey high school, he also did not wish to speak and referred AFP to the national education services.

In December, Mediapart stated that the principal had never been interviewed in this case. “For me, there is no school bullying. There was a trial for students who made some mockery. That’s all “, he told the media. Contacted, the Epinal public prosecutor’s office did not respond.

Appeal to the Court of Cassation

Lucas, 13, committed suicide on January 7, 2023 in Golbey (Vosges), after writing a note expressing his desire to end his life. Those close to him had denounced acts of harassment, revealing the mockery and homophobic insults of which the teenager had said he was the victim from students at his college.

The Nancy Court of Appeal also acquitted in November the four teenagers prosecuted for acts of “harassment leading to the suicide” of Lucas. At first instance, the court found the four minors guilty of harassment, but without retaining the causal link between these facts and Lucas’ suicide.

This relaxation constituted ” a shock “ for Lucas’ mother, according to Me Faivre. “The judicial system today does not respond to the reality experienced by victims of school bullying who must be protected”, she lamented, before announcing an appeal to the Court of Cassation. The public prosecutor’s office also filed a cassation appeal.
