A tragic accident on the A31 motorway near Val d’Astico, Italy, has resulted in the death of one construction worker and left another in critical condition after a truck veered off course and struck their worksite. The incident occurred at 1:00 PM local time on Thursday, July 18, 2024, between Noventa Vincentina and Berico, prompting a large emergency response.
Details of the A31 Motorway Accident
Initial reports indicate the truck skidded on the southern stretch of the A31, just before the Agugliaro toll booth in the province of Vicenza. The vehicle then overwhelmed two workers who were actively working on a clearly marked construction site.
“The scene was chaotic,” stated a senior official. “Motorists immediately began raising the alarm, along with the truck driver himself.”
Emergency Response and Medical Treatment
Emergency medical services, including Suem 118, were dispatched to the scene. An ambulance from the Noventa Vicentina hospital arrived first, but paramedics were only able to confirm the immediate death of one worker.
The second worker received on-site stabilization from doctors before being airlifted by helicopter from Verona. The helicopter landed directly on the shoulder of the motorway to expedite transport to the San Bortolo hospital in Vicenza, where the injured worker was immediately admitted to the resuscitation department in very serious condition.
Ongoing Investigation
Firefighters and two patrols from the local police force are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the truck’s loss of control and assessing any potential contributing factors.
The incident underscores the inherent risks faced by construction workers, even on well-marked sites. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance, particularly in motorway construction zones.
