Several environmental associations have filed a lawsuit to request the suspension of the motorway works between Toulouse and Castres, considering that they risk harming protected species, they announced in a press release on Friday.

This summary suspension, an emergency procedure, will be examined on Tuesday July 25 by the administrative court of Toulouse, pending the examination on the merits of another appeal, filed in June, against the construction of the A69 motorway.

About ten associations and collectives are at the origin of this appeal, among which are the regional branches of France Nature Environnement and Friends of the Earth, the Confédération paysanne or La Voie est Libre. Thousands of demonstrators had gathered in April against this project, and had built a wall on the road.

“Explanations and clarifications” provided

They believe that the construction of the motorway risks harming protected species, such as the European otter, and express “serious doubts about the legality of the environmental authorization” granted in March.

For its part, the company Atosca, in charge of the works, recalls that the motorway was declared of public utility by a decree of 2018 and ensures that it will provide “all the explanations and details useful to the administrative judge” about its environmental commitments. “For each tree and shrub impacted, we will replant five,” assured the director of the company to Parisian.

In May, the Minister Delegate for Transport Clément Beaune argued that the motorway would be built despite the disputes, but that “some additional improvements” must be found on the environmental aspects.
