A$AP Rocky Finally Addresses Liam Gallagher’s “WhatsApp Ricky” Nickname
The unlikely exchange, originating in 2017, resurfaced recently after the rapper referenced it during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring jimmy Fallon.
Nearly a decade after Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher playfully misidentified him as “WhatsApp ricky,” A$AP Rocky has finally responded to the moniker.The initial confusion occurred during a 2017 interview with GQ, where Gallagher discussed his children’s musical tastes, expressing their fondness for grime artists like Stormzy and Skepta. He then turned to a description of the American rapper, stating, “They also like that bloke, WhatsApp Ricky. You know,the American geezer,stylish,funny,gold teeth.”
When corrected by the interviewer and asked if he meant A$AP Rocky, gallagher doubled down, declaring, “Oh yeah, that’s the fella.WhatsApp Ricky. That’s a better fucking name anyway.”
The story gained renewed attention when A$AP rocky brought it up during a recent segment on The Tonight show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he and the host competed to identify songs from brief snippets. After correctly identifying tracks by OutKast and The Verve, the conversation shifted to the latter band’s history as an opening act for Oasis’s “Live ’25” comeback shows.
“The Verve,I thought it was Oasis,” fallon remarked,referencing their game.
“By the way, I missed [Oasis’ comeback] tour, but The Verve opened for Oasis and sang that jam…” Fallon continued, prompting A$AP Rocky to interject with, “liam calls me ‘WhatsApp Ricky.'”
Rocky clarified the anecdote for Fallon, who responded with laughter, calling it “fantastic” and “the greatest thing.” he added, “We’ve got to talk to Liam [about that] when he comes back. Oh my god,he’s so funny.”
A$AP Rocky’s appearance on the talk show coincided with the release of his new album, Don’t Be Dumb, on January 16th – his first full-length project in eight years. The album has received critical acclaim, with NME awarding it four stars and describing it as a “suited, settled and self-assured return that doesn’t dim his light.” The review further noted that the album showcases a more mature side of the artist, reframing his signature swagger into something more refined.
