The political bang also affects Washington: The US Embassy in Israel this evening (Monday) referred to the decision to dissolve the Knesset and advance the elections, and clarified that US President Joe Biden’s visit to Israel will currently take place on July 13 and 14. As a result, Yair Lapid will be the one to welcome Biden as prime minister and not Naftali Bennett.

According to the embassy announcement, “The working assumption now is that Biden’s visit next month will take place as planned. The president is coming for the people of Israel.” Sources at the embassy clarified that Biden’s visit “has nothing to do with the political situation in Israel, and we will not speculate about it. The president will emphasize that Israel-US relations are broader than the leaders who are leading the countries.”

As you may recall, Biden’s visit was originally scheduled to take place last week, but was eventually postponed to July – apparently because of the desire to include a visit to Saudi Arabia, which has sparked much controversy in the Democratic Party. Israel feared that the planned visit would be completely canceled due to the ongoing political crisis, due to the desire of the Americans not to be perceived as interfering in Israeli politics.
