Tamil Nadu State Secretary of the Communist Party of India R. Mutharasan has insisted that in the Pongal gift package that will be distributed on January 2, along with Rs.1000 cash, sugarcane, coconut, and a bunch of turmeric should be given along with the 21 items that were given last year.
In a statement issued by him in this regard, the Pongal gift package that has been given by the Tamil Nadu government for the past few years has been announced. The Communist Party of India welcomes the Chief Minister’s announcement that all family card holders will be given one kg of rice, sugar and Rs.1000 in cash through fair price shops.

Meanwhile, last year there were 21 items in the gift package including tamarisk, sugar, cardamom, sugarcane and ghee. Disappointingly, only rice and sugar have been announced this year. A question arises as to why “Sugar” is used for Pongal when we expect printed jaggery.
In anticipation of the Pongal festival, the farmers who grew sugarcane and the coconut farmers and the public were expecting that “Coconut” should be included in the Pongal gift package this year. They informed the Tamil Nadu government that they are waiting with great hope that the Chief Minister will review and distribute the Pongal gift package, and in the Pongal gift package that will be distributed on January 2, along with cash of Rs.1000, sugarcane, coconut, and bunch of turmeric will be distributed along with the 21 items given last year.
