Internet Package Complaints Spark Debate in Egypt

A journalist’s frustration with official responses to widespread reports of rapidly depleting data plans is fueling a national conversation.

  • Journalist Amr Adeeb publicly questioned the handling of citizen complaints regarding internet data usage.
  • Engineer Mohamed Ibrahim of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority cited low official complaint numbers—less than 2,000 out of 14 million subscribers.
  • Adeeb argued that the official figures don’t reflect the widespread frustration voiced on social media.
  • The exchange highlights a disconnect between official data and public perception.

Are Egyptian internet users actually satisfied with their data plans? That’s the question at the heart of a recent on-air exchange between journalist Amr Adeeb and Engineer Mohamed Ibrahim, Head of the Community Communication Sector at the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. Adeeb voiced his exasperation with what he perceived as dismissive responses to public concerns about internet packages disappearing faster than expected.

A Frustrating Exchange

During the “Al-Hekaya” program on MBC Misr, Adeeb expressed his annoyance, stating sarcastically, “You don’t complain either.. and I am the one who looks like a man who wants to cause trouble in the country and douche… I am the one who is wrong.” He further elaborated that he felt unfairly positioned as the problem-raiser, when his role is simply to relay the concerns of citizens.

Adeeb continued, directing his comments to officials, “I am the one who is at fault when I walk behind you. The official says that the complaints are not mentioned! You are putting me in shameful situations in front of the people and in front of the officials.” He admitted to feeling “tired… and old,” suggesting this isn’t the first time he’s encountered this pattern of disconnect between official responses and public sentiment.

Official Figures vs. Social Media Sentiment

Engineer Ibrahim responded by presenting official data, stating that complaints specifically related to internet problems did not exceed 2,000 out of a total of 14 million active subscriber lines. However, Adeeb countered that the sheer volume of complaints circulating on social media platforms indicates a more significant issue that warrants greater attention from regulatory bodies.

Adeeb stressed that the constant stream of grievances online suggests a real problem that needs to be acknowledged and addressed with more robust measures. The debate underscores a growing tension between official statistics and the lived experiences of Egyptian internet users.

What constitutes a reasonable data allowance for the average Egyptian internet user? This question remains unanswered as the debate continues.
