The sporting goods manufacturer Adidas apparently tried until the end to extend its equipment deal with the DFB. “Bild” reported that Adidas boss Björn Gulden personally traveled to the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt am Main on Wednesday. A final offer was presented there and a possible extension was discussed.

Now apparently further details have become known. As the TV channel Sky reports, CEO Gulden addressed Adidas employees on Thursday afternoon. In a team call, Gulden is said to have expressed his regret. He described Nike’s offer as “unbelievable.” He also said: “Sorry to all Germans!” Adidas couldn’t keep up with the amount.

The outcome of the negotiations is known: The DFB rejected the Adidas offer, the association will be equipped by Nike for eight years from 2027 and will receive around 100 million per year for this. After more than 70 years, the DFB is turning away from its supplier for the first time – and switching to the US giant.

According to the DFB, Nike “made by far the best economic offer.” According to a report in the “Handelsblatt”, the offer amounts to at least 100 million euros per year. According to information from the “Bild” newspaper, Adidas recently paid around 50 million euros.
