Adoption by the 36th AU Summit of the Tangier Declaration on Promoting the Peace-Security-Development Nexus in Africa

The 36^th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the 54 member countries of the African Union (AU), which met on February 18 and 19 in Addis Ababa, adopted the Declaration of the AU Political Conference on the promotion of the link between peace, security and development in Africa, entitled “Declaration of Tangier”.

In a decision issued on Wednesday in Addis Ababa, the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the pan-African organization endorsed the declaration of the AU Inaugural Conference on the policy aimed at promoting the nexus between peace, Security and Development in Africa – The Promise of Regional Integration, which was adopted in Tangier in October 2022.

The AU Summit urged the AU Commission to implement its conclusions and, in this regard, invited the partners of the Tangier Process to strengthen their support for the implementation of projects relating to the link between peace, security and development.

As a reminder, the Peace and Security Council of the AU had unanimously adopted the Declaration of Tangier and decided to submit it for examination and adoption to the Summit of the Union during its 36th ordinary session.

The Tangier Declaration enshrines in particular a new multidimensional approach which takes into consideration the importance of the relationship between peace, security and development in the strategies and programs for establishing peace and security and the fight against terrorism. and extremism on the African continent.
