Because he appointed himself chairman of the health committee with a homemade sign, the AfD parliamentary group initiated disciplinary proceedings against Kay-Uwe Ziegler.

Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated within the party against the AfD health politician Kay-Uwe Ziegler. A spokesman for the AfD parliamentary group confirmed this on Thursday. The parliamentary group executive committee made this decision on Monday. The spokesman did not comment on the content of the proceedings. This is not yet completed.

Last week, Ziegler took the place of incumbent chairwoman Kirsten Kappert-Gonther (Greens) on the health committee and placed a sign “committee chair” in front of her. He did not comply with the committee secretariat’s immediate request to vacate the place. According to participants, the meeting started late because the MPs from the other factions did not initially take part in protest against the AfD campaign. Ziegler then vacated the place.

AfD criticizes hand-made sign: “Not our style”

The first parliamentary managing director of the AfD parliamentary group, Bernd Baumann, criticized Ziegler a few days ago: “We didn’t like that. That’s not the way we do it.”

The incident marked the climax of a dispute between the other factions and the AfD that had been going on for more than two years. After the last federal election, she failed with her candidates for the chairmanship of three federal parliamentary committees – including the health committee – and feels her rights have been violated and has therefore sued the Federal Constitutional Court. The court has been dealing with the issue since Wednesday. A judgment is only expected in a few months.

Ziegler is also threatened with paying a fine of 1,000 euros. After the scandal in the Health Committee, Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD) announced at the meeting of the Council of Elders that she would initiate appropriate proceedings “due to a more than minor violation of the Bundestag’s house rules”.
