Afonso Eulálio claims Giro d’Italia pink jersey after dramatic breakaway

Afonso Eulálio, a 24-year-old newcomer to the professional road circuit, has claimed the Afonso Eulálio takes Giro d’Italia pink jersey after a chaotic and weather-beaten Stage 5. The Portuguese rider, who transitioned to the WorldTour in 2025 with Bahrain Victorious, found himself in the overall lead following a breakaway that was defined as much by misfortune as it was by endurance.

Eulálio entered the day sitting 31st in the general classification, trailing the previous leader, Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek, by 1 minute and 11 seconds. By the end of the day’s grueling ride to Potenza, he had not only erased that deficit but established a commanding lead over the race favorites, including a substantial 6-minute and 22-second cushion over Jonas Vingegaard of Visma-Lease a Bike.

The ascent to the top of the maglia rosa was far from seamless. In a stage marked by plummeting temperatures and hailstones, Eulálio and Igor Arrieta of UAE Team Emirates-XRG spent much of the day fighting for survival and position. The drama peaked on the rain-slicked descent of the category 2 Monte Grande di Viggiano, where both lead riders suffered crashes in quick succession, momentarily threatening to derail Eulálio’s ambitions.

A descent defined by chaos

The sequence of events in the finale was a volatile series of fortunes. After Eulálio closed the gap to Arrieta near the summit of Monte Grande di Viggiano, he surged ahead on the descent. However, the treacherous conditions claimed Arrieta first, followed shortly by Eulálio himself. Despite the fall, the Portuguese rider recovered quickly, finding his bike ready and continuing his push toward the finish.

As the peloton, led by Lidl-Trek and Giulio Ciccone, opted to abandon the chase in the rugged finale to Potenza, the gap widened. While the general classification group focused on avoiding crashes in the freezing rain, Eulálio and Arrieta remained the primary protagonists of the day.

In the final stretch, Arrieta managed to regain contact and secured the stage victory in a slow-paced sprint. While Eulálio missed out on the stage win, the time gain was more than sufficient to secure the overall lead. He now holds a 2-minute and 51-second advantage over Arrieta in the official Giro d’Italia standings.

“The plan was initially only to go for the stage victory, but I knew I was only one minute behind the maglia rosa, so I tried for that as well,” Eulálio said. “Then when I crashed, I didn’t know what to think. I was feeling super-stressed, but when I looked for my bike, it was already there for me, and I was ready to continue.”

From mountain trails to the WorldTour

For Eulálio, the transition to the pinnacle of road racing has been rapid. Only a year removed from a career in mountain biking, the rider admitted that his current position feels surreal. He joined the WorldTour in 2025, and this marks only his second appearance in a Grand Tour.

“It’s not a dream come true, it’s crazy,” Eulálio said, reflecting on his trajectory. “I was just enjoying my career in mountain biking, and somebody asked me to try a road bike. I came into the WorldTour in 2025, and now I’m in the pink jersey. I don’t know how I feel, it’s crazy.”

The victory also provides a critical emotional lift for Bahrain Victorious. The team’s initial strategy centered on Santiago Buitrago, who was targeted for a top-five finish in Rome. However, after Buitrago crashed out on Stage 2, the team shifted its focus, giving the rest of the squad the freedom to pursue stage wins and opportunistic GC gains.

Analyzing the gap and the road ahead

While a lead of over six minutes over a favorite like Jonas Vingegaard is statistically massive, the cycling world is wary of the “early break” phenomenon. The current situation draws parallels to the 2024 Vuelta a España, where Ben O’Connor claimed the red jersey after a long-distance move that the top teams failed to neutralize.

Portuguese fans may also see echoes of João Almeida’s 2020 run, where he seized the pink jersey in unexpected circumstances and defended it for two weeks. However, Eulálio is acutely aware of his own limitations as the race progresses toward the high mountains and technical tests.

The primary concern for the new leader is the upcoming time trial, a discipline where mountain bike specialists often struggle against the aerodynamic precision of GC veterans. Eulálio acknowledged this vulnerability during his post-race press conference, noting that the time trial would be “very hard” for him.

Despite the looming challenge, the achievement remains a milestone for both the rider and his team. For a newcomer who has spent most of his life on dirt trails, wearing the most prestigious jersey in Italian cycling is a success that transcends the eventual final standings in Rome.

The race now moves into its next phase, where the major teams will likely begin a coordinated effort to reclaim the lead. The next critical checkpoint will be the upcoming time trial, which is expected to significantly reshape the general classification.
