Major Ahlam Al-Douzi, a Tunisian peacekeeping officer currently working with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), won the United Nations Pioneer Award, which is given to female employees working in the field of justice and correctional institutions.

Major Al-Douzi, a specialist in ammunition and weapons, is the first expert in this field to work with the MONUSCO mission.

Al-Douzi said on the “United Nations News” website before receiving the award, during a ceremony held in New York on Tuesday, “Nothing is difficult for a woman. I will open the door for many women to work in the same field and not say that this is limited to men only. Women are half of society, so why do we exclude them from society?”

Major Douzi has led a series of unprecedented technical investigations into serious crimes, which lay the foundation for holding perpetrators accountable, and through her support to the Joint Ammunition Examination Group – a partnership between Congolese authorities and MONUSCO – she has provided forensic and weapons and ammunition analyzes of crimes involving attacks Against civilians and peacekeeping forces.
