Indian SMBs Lead AI Adoption, Outpacing Metro Areas in Growth Confidence

A new study reveals that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) across India are embracing artificial intelligence (AI) at a remarkable rate, with cities like Chandigarh and Jaipur demonstrating particularly strong momentum and exceeding adoption levels seen in larger metropolitan areas. Teh research, commissioned by LinkedIn and conducted by YouGov, indicates a important shift in how Indian SMBs approach growth and competitiveness.

SMBs Embrace AI as a Core Strategy

Indian SMBs are entering a period of unprecedented confidence, with 92% of decision-makers anticipating business growth within the next 12 months. This optimism is fueled by a widespread commitment to AI adoption, as 95.6% of SMBs are currently investing in or planning to implement AI solutions. This signifies a move beyond experimentation, with technology now viewed as basic infrastructure for success.

“Indian SMBs are moving from ‘startup hustle’ to ‘strategic muscle’,” stated Kumaresh Pattabiraman, Country manager, LinkedIn india.”Entrepreneurs are reimagining how business is built, using AI to drive efficiency, skills-first hiring to build capability, and trusted digital ecosystems to expand thier market footprint.”

AI Drives Operational Efficiency and survival

The urgency behind this adoption is clear: AI is no longer considered a futuristic concept but a baseline requirement for growth. Over half of SMBs (57%) view AI and automation as essential for maintaining a competitive edge. Operational efficiency is a key driver, with 54% of businesses citing it as crucial for protecting profit margins, and 51% recognizing digital transformation as critical for survival.

Regional Variations in AI Focus

While AI adoption is widespread, different regions are prioritizing different applications. For example, 74% now rely on AI in sales for more precise targeting and automated follow-ups, enabling them to compete with the sophistication of larger enterprises.

Rahul Karthikeyan, Chief Marketing Officer at Scaler, highlighted the impact of AI-driven marketing, noting that sponsored content, particularly vertical formats, delivered a 20% higher lead-to-payment conversion rate compared to static formats on other channels. In august alone, LinkedIn generated approximately 70-80 new payments for Scaler with a return on spend (RoS) of 2.2.

Trust and Credibility are Paramount

As SMBs accelerate AI adoption, they are demonstrating a discerning approach to platform selection. A significant 95% of respondents indicated that platform credibility is more vital than cost or convenience. Key considerations include data security (83%), seamless integration (79%), and clear return on investment (ROI) visibility (75%).

These shifts collectively signal the emergence of a more resilient and intelligent SMB ecosystem – one that is not merely adapting to the AI era but actively shaping it.

Methodology

The findings are based on an online survey of 1,027 SMB and MSME owners, entrepreneurs, directors, and senior managers across India, commissioned by LinkedIn and conducted by YouGov. The study encompassed 10 key cities – Delhi NCR, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata – representing businesses across North & Central, West, South, and East regions.
