Agentic AI: The New Frontier in Healthcare Efficiency and Patient Care

A growing number of healthcare organizations are turning to agentic artificial intelligence to revolutionize care coordination, streamline patient journeys, and expand access to vital services. Unlike conventional AI tools, these systems aren’t simply passive; they actively analyze information and orchestrate complex workflows across clinical and administrative settings, promising a new era of efficiency and improved patient outcomes.

Laying the Foundation for Automation

According to a senior research director at IDC, agentic AI is proving instrumental in stabilizing IT infrastructure, paving the way for more advanced automation on the front end. This foundational role is notably crucial as hospitals grapple with unpredictable patient volumes and staffing shortages. Capacity optimization agents are gaining traction, especially in emergency departments where delays can have meaningful consequences.

Color Health and Google Partner to Expand Cancer screening Access

Color Health, a company specializing in cancer care, recently collaborated with Google to deploy an agentic AI assistant – the Color Assistant – to improve access to breast cancer screenings. The system automates the initial steps of risk assessment and screening for women aged 40 and older, as well as those identified as higher risk based on clinical guidelines.

“In healthcare, the average case is simple, but some cases can be very complex,” explained the CEO of Color Health. The sheer number of potential risk factors – including family history, genetic predispositions, and environmental exposures – creates a level of complexity that makes traditional web forms impractical.

Through an online portal, the agent gathers essential information, answers patient questions, and directs appropriate cases to clinicians within Color Medical’s nationwide network for review. Care teams then follow up to clarify details, schedule necessary imaging, such as mammograms, ultrasounds, or MRIs. “The agentic model,by having a reasoning layer in the process, enables you to build these workflows that can encapsulate that complexity,” the CEO added.

Hackensack Meridian Health Embraces “Automation Plus”

Hackensack Meridian Health in New Jersey is implementing agentic AI to automate tasks that clinicians frequently enough lack the time to consistently manage. The association’s approach, dubbed “automation plus” by a senior vice president and chief AI officer, focuses on addressing unmet needs and expanding capacity.

A key application is post-discharge patient follow-up,designed to prevent avoidable readmissions. An AI agent named Erin proactively checks in with patients to assess their well-being,confirm follow-up appointments, verify medication adherence, and identify any immediate concerns. “If that’s the case, the conversation gets diverted to a human,” the chief AI officer stated. The system meticulously transcribes and summarizes interactions, flags potential issues, and ensures a clinician reviews each case.

Another agent is streamlining the historically labor-intensive claims appeals process. This agent analyzes denial letters, identifies missing information, assembles corrected documentation, and submits it for nurse approval. “We are now processing more appeals,” the chief AI officer noted. “Our whole appeals process sometimes took 15 to 16 days. Now, we do it in one or two days.”
