Düsseldorf In the latest episode of Handelsblatt Disrupt, Handelsblatt Editor-in-Chief Sebastian Matthes talks to SPD leader Saskia Esken about artificial intelligence. The politician worked as a programmer for a few years many years ago. She expects technology to have many positive effects on society, but warns against overestimating AI. That only creates fear. “AI is an artificial intelligence and not a human one,” she says.

The discussion also addresses the question of how the education system needs to change and what the key qualifications of the future will be. Esken identifies four key skills: “It’s about creative thinking, about critical thinking, about communicating and collaborating with others.”

Routine tasks in particular would change with AI and often become easier and better, for example in medicine or administration. One example is planning and approval procedures where large amounts of data have to be managed. “All participation formats are currently being checked manually,” explains Esken. “What category do you belong in? Are they allowed at all? Do they fit the topic?” This is precisely what can be significantly simplified with language models and still be improved in terms of quality.

In addition, Esken talks about where and to what extent regulatory measures through the planned AI Act of the EU make sense – and to what extent politics must leave room for competition with the USA and China.

And of course she also comments on the current state of the federal government.
