Indie Developer Deletes Game After Partner’s Critique

The creator of a roguelike card game removed his title from the Steam store on January 30, citing ethical concerns and a newfound perspective.

  • On january 10, Eero Laine announced his decision to remove Hardest from Steam.
  • Laine created the game in Summer 2025 using freely available university tools.
  • He now believes the use of AI-generated assets negatively impacts the economy and habitat.
  • A recent conversation with his girlfriend prompted the decision to remove the game.

The Steam store page for the indie card game Hardest featured a surprising update on January 10. Developer Eero Laine announced he would be removing Hardest wholly from the platform on January 30. according to Laine, the game was created during the summer of 2025 utilizing free tools provided by his university, and at the time, he hadn’t fully considered the broader implications of AI technology.

“I made [Hardest] during the summer in couple months [sic] and thought to use AI because in university there is so much brainwashing on students and all the tools are given for free, so I could generate unlimited images for free,” Laine explained in a steam post titled “AI Is Bad.” “But I have realized the AI is not actually free, and it has a major effect on the economy and environment. Some AI companies can use this game just existing as a reason the get more investment for their AI companies[sic], that benefit no one, but rather suck resources from the economy from hard working people.”

Did you know? – AI image generation requires significant computational power, contributing to energy consumption and environmental impact. This is a growing concern for developers.

Laine stated he coded “everything” himself in Hardest, and in the future, he may attempt to build a new game with “real assets” utilizing his existing, non-AI code. He concluded the Steam update with a stark assessment: “but the game existing in it’s current form is a disgrace to all game makers and players. Ethically only logical reason is to delete the game from Steam. The girl I’ve been dating for a month made me realize this.”

The decision to remove a game based on a partner’s critique is unusual, to say the least. In this case, the assessment of AI-generated content as lacking artistic merit appears to have resonated deeply with the developer, prompting a significant change of course.

Pro tip – Consider the long-term ethical implications of using AI tools in creative projects. Research the source and potential impact of these technologies.
