AI Bots Now Indistinguishable From Humans in Online Polls, Threatening Election Integrity

A new study reveals that sophisticated artificial intelligence can easily corrupt online public opinion surveys, raising serious concerns about the reliability of polling data and the potential for manipulation of democratic processes.

The research, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, demonstrates that large language models (LLMs) can convincingly mimic human responses, evade detection systems, and systematically skew survey results. This poses a “critical vulnerability in our data infrastructure,” according to Sean Westwood, an associate professor of government at Dartmouth University and the study’s author.

The Rise of the ‘Autonomous Synthetic Respondent’

To illustrate the extent of the problem, Westwood developed an AI tool – dubbed an “autonomous synthetic respondent” – capable of convincingly posing as a human participant in online surveys. Operating from a simple 500-word prompt, the tool constructs a detailed demographic persona, including age, gender, race, education, income, and state of residence.

Crucially, the AI doesn’t simply provide answers; it simulates the human experience of taking a survey. It replicates realistic reading times, generates human-like mouse movements, and even types responses one keystroke at a time, complete with plausible typos and corrections. In over 43,000 tests, the tool successfully fooled 99.8% of systems into believing it was a real person. It also flawlessly completed logic puzzles and bypassed common anti-bot measures like reCAPTCHA.

“These aren’t crude bots,” Westwood explained. “They think through each question and act like real, careful people making the data look completely legitimate.”

A Few Bots Could Swing an Election

The implications of this technology are particularly alarming when considering political polling. Westwood’s research examined the potential impact on the 2024 US presidential election, finding that as few as 10 to 52 strategically deployed AI responses could have flipped the predicted outcome of seven top-tier national polls during the crucial final week of campaigning.

The cost of deploying these “synthetic respondents” is shockingly low – as little as 5 US cents (4 euro cents) per response. This makes large-scale manipulation incredibly accessible.

The threat extends beyond domestic interference. The AI performed flawlessly even when programmed in Russian, Mandarin, or Korean, translating those languages into perfect English responses. This opens the door for exploitation by foreign actors seeking to influence elections or sow discord. Disinformation campaigns fueled by AI have already been observed in European elections, including a recent instance in Moldova.

Beyond Politics: A Threat to Scientific Research

The vulnerability isn’t limited to political polling. Scientific research relies heavily on survey data, with thousands of peer-reviewed studies published annually based on information gathered from online platforms. Westwood warns that tainted data could “poison the entire knowledge ecosystem.”

“With survey data tainted by bots, AI can poison the entire knowledge ecosystem,” he stated.

The Path Forward: Verifying Human Participation

The study emphasizes the urgent need for the scientific community and polling organizations to develop new methods for verifying human participation in online surveys. While the technology to do so exists, Westwood argues that the “will to implement it” is currently lacking.

“The technology exists to verify real human participation; we just need the will to implement it,” Westwood said. “If we act now, we can preserve both the integrity of polling and the democratic accountability it provides.”
