AI Scam: Viral Reddit Post & Food Delivery Apps

by Priyanka Patel

A widely shared Reddit post alleging exploitative practices at a major food delivery company is highly likely not what it truly seems. The post, originally published January 2nd,quickly amassed nearly 90,000 upvotes as the anonymous user “Trowaway_whistleblow” detailed claims of manipulated orders and a dismissive attitude toward delivery drivers.

AI Detection Raises Doubts About viral Confession

The authenticity of the post has come under scrutiny, with multiple AI detection tools offering conflicting results.

Is it possible to reliably detect AI-generated text? Currently, no.While some tools flag content as potentially AI-written, others deem it human-authored, highlighting the limitations of existing technology.

Several online AI detectors, including Copyleaks, GPTZero, Pangram, Gemini, and Claude, indicated the 586-word post was probably generated by artificial intelligence. Though, ZeroGPT and QuillBot classified it as human-written, while ChatGPT offered an inconclusive assessment.

Did you know?-AI detection tools are constantly evolving, but they are not foolproof. False positives and negatives are common, making verification crucial.

Questionable Evidence Further Fuels Suspicion

Concerns deepened when an image purportedly showing an employee badge from Uber Eats surfaced. The user shared the image with multiple journalists, including those at Platformer and Hard Fork, but Gemini, a Google AI model, flagged it as potentially generated or edited. The image displayed the Uber Eats logo alongside obscured fields for employee name and photo, labeled “senior software engineer.” Gemini noted the unusual use of the Uber Eats logo instead of the standard Uber branding, along with slight visual inconsistencies.

Uber later confirmed that Uber eats-branded employee badges do not exist.

Reporter Alex shultz of Hard reset, a Substack publication, received what the user claimed was an internal Uber document. However, the user deleted their Signal account after Shultz questioned its authenticity. A subsequent message to Shultz indicated the user was no longer available on the platform.

Pro tip-When evaluating online claims, cross-reference information with multiple sources. Look for corroborating evidence from reputable outlets.

Delivery Companies Deny Allegations

Both Uber and DoorDash have vehemently denied the claims made in the Reddit post. Uber spokesperson Noah Edwardsen stated,”Not only are the claims fake, but they’re also dead wrong.” Andrew Macdonald of Uber Eats wrote on X, “This post is definitively not about us. I suspect it is entirely made up. Don’t trust everything you read on the internet.”

DoorDash CEO Tony Xu also dismissed the allegations as “appalling” in a post on X, stating, “this is not DoorDash, and I would fire anyone who promoted or tolerated the kind of culture described in this Reddit post.”

  • A viral Reddit post alleging misconduct at a food delivery company is likely AI-generated.
  • AI detection tools provided mixed results, but inconsistencies in supporting evidence raised red flags.
