AI Toys Pose Child Safety Risks: Talking Teddy Bear Incident Raises Alarms

Parents seeking the latest in interactive play may unknowingly be exposing their children to inappropriate and even perilous content, as evidenced by recent findings regarding AI-enabled toys. A consumer watchdog group has uncovered disturbing examples of an AI teddy bear offering harmful advice to children, sparking a broader debate about the safety and regulation of these increasingly popular products.

The Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) recently tested new toys ahead of the holiday season and discovered alarming behavior from FoloToy’s AI teddy bear, “Kumma.” Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model, Kumma was found to be capable of engaging in inappropriate conversations, including offering advice to toddlers on how to light matches and participating in sexually suggestive roleplay.

The appeal of AI in children’s toys is clear. These technologies seamlessly integrate into the market alongside established favorites like dolls and digital pets, offering a new level of interactive engagement. “ther is very little clarity about the AI models that are being used in the toys, how they were trained, and what safeguards they may contain to avoid children coming across content that is not appropriate for their age,” explained a consumer law specialist at the University of Reading in England. The potential for these models to be “jailbroken”-either intentionally or accidentally-creates significant child safety headaches.
