Airbnb Bans Guest Chores as Hosts Threaten Higher Cleaning Fees

Airbnb has announced new rules effective November 20, 2026, prohibiting hosts from requiring guests to strip beds, start laundry, wash dishes, or haul trash offsite at checkout. The update has sparked sharp division between travelers celebrating the change and hosts threatening higher cleaning fees or platform walkouts.

The short-term rental market finds itself caught in an intense dispute following a policy shift that redefines guest responsibilities. Announced on October 20, 2026, the updated reasonable house rules and requests policy applies worldwide to any reservation booked on or after November 20, 2026. Under the new guidelines, property owners can no longer compel visitors to complete tasks that demand significant effort or time typically handled by cleaning professionals.

Airbnb bans hosts from requiring guests to do chores

For years, travelers have voiced frustration over paying cleaning fees while simultaneously facing extensive departure checklists. The changes draw a distinct line between keeping a rental reasonably tidy and performing unpaid domestic labor. While guests have largely welcomed the intervention, the reaction from property owners has revealed deep friction across the platform. Airbnb has walked a fine line since two roommates, Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, founded the company 18 years ago by charging people to sleep on an air mattress in their San Francisco apartment when they needed extra cash.

Host Backlash and The Threat of Higher Fees

Many property owners have reacted to the policy with intense resistance, arguing that basic tidying is a fundamental part of staying in someone else’s private home. Content creator Matt Williams criticized the shift in an online post on X, calling the restrictions bonkers and defending a host’s right to expect guests to take out the trash or load the dishwasher. California-based writer Philip Walford replied to Williams’ complaint, stating that individuals in the hospitality business are not there to have their mortgages paid off without consequences or inconvenience.

Airbnb hosts can no longer make guests do chores

Other hosts warned that the restrictions will disrupt turnover times, particularly in high-demand tourism hubs. Savannah Revis, owner of Earthwise Cleaning, explained that tasks like running initial loads of towels make or break whether cleaning teams can finish before incoming guests arrive.

Faced with new limits on checkout requests, numerous owners have threatened to close their calendars, remove kitchen amenities, or shift their listings to competing services like VRBO. Others indicate they will simply hire additional cleaning help and pass those expenses directly to consumers. Observers note that the policy could make an already expensive platform costlier. Alex Foti, president of Bretton Woods Vacations, which manages more than 120 rentals in New Hampshire, noted that the new regulations will have little impact on his properties.

Travelers Welcome End of Departure Chores

Travelers who have grown weary of detailed departure chores have greeted the update with enthusiasm. Other guests echoed the sentiment, pointing out the contradiction of paying cleaning charges while spending the final hours of a vacation sweeping floors and pulling sheets.

Despite the relief over abolished chores, platform guidelines still require visitors to maintain basic respect for rental properties. Travelers cannot leave rentals in a condition that requires excessive cleaning, and hosts retain the ability to leave negative cleanliness reviews or seek compensation for property damage through AirCover. Furthermore, hosts can still request simple common-sense measures, such as gathering used towels, placing dirty tableware in the sink, or sorting recycling into designated indoor bins. Additional requests permitted in specific scenarios include requiring guests to place trash in animal-proof containers in regions where bears are common or asking guests to take shorter showers during a drought.

Standardized House Rules and Document Limits

Alongside the cleaning changes, the platform is standardizing permissible house rules into seven distinct categories. Owners can set parameters regarding maximum guest counts, quiet hours, events, pet and smoking policies, photos, and checkout locking procedures. All requirements must be explicitly disclosed in the listing prior to booking.

The updated framework also restricts owners from requiring separate offline rental contracts or demanding copies of government identification, outside of specific exemptions required by local laws, homeowners associations, monthly rentals of at least 28 nights, or stays in an Airbnb Luxe property. For upcoming holiday and winter travel, the immediate impact depends entirely on booking dates; reservations secured before November 20 remain governed by previous agreements.
