Tu iPhone, and the rest of the Apple devices that you may have in your possession, is at risk. At least, as long as you don’t update them to the latest version of their operating systems, which has just been released by the apple firm. Thanks to security holes, a cybercriminal could infect the victim’s gadgets and gain full control. Also with all the information that the user stores inside.

The vulnerabilities, which affect iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple Watch, were notified at the beginning of the month by the Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky. The firm’s researchers then noted that security gaps could have begun to be exploited in attacks dating back to 2019.

To infect users’ devices using the holes, criminals simply need to send a message via the iMessage platform native to Apple devices. Unlike other ‘hacks’, in this case they don’t have to trick the victim into clicking on some malicious link. Sending the SMS is enough.

These vulnerabilities, known as ‘zero-click’ because the user does not need to install anything malicious themselves, can affect devices around the world.

In recent years, criminals – and spyware vendors such as the NSO Group, the creators of Pegasus – have devoted a lot of effort to hole detection in Apple devices. In principle, the devices of this company are more complicated to infect, since, by default, the company does not allow the download of applications from alternative stores to the official one, the App Store. Something that, in the EU, is expected to change shortly.

Be that as it may, these types of security flaws are not usually exploited on a massive scale. Normally, they are used against very specific objectives, so if you are an ordinary user, the chances that these vulnerabilities have affected you are practically non-existent.

«These types of vulnerabilities do not burn with anyone. They are for very specific objectives, the more they use it, the more chances there are that someone will find out and that they will turn off the tap, as has happened now, “explains Josep Albors, head of research at the cybersecurity company ESET, in conversation with ABC.

Be that as it may, as we have already explained, Apple has already released patches that fix the vulnerabilities on all devices. To close the door to criminals, it is key that users install the updates as soon as possible in all the ‘gadgets’ you have from the brand.
