HALF-CROWN. A competitive sporting event linked to a double important and significant social value will see the Trentino para-athlete Alessandro Colombo busy next April 6-7 in an attempt to Everesting Challenge or of repeat the climb between the valley station and the mountain station in Mezzocorona 14 times until covering a difference in altitude of 8,840 meters.
The exceptional nature of the feat lies in the physiological conditions of Alessandro, protagonist of an amputation of part of the leg after a motorcycle accident in the 1990s and then subjected, at his will, to a second surgical operation to re-establish a psycho-physiological balance capable of allowing him to return to life and close a mentally troubled period characterized by constant physical pain, which limited his normal life.
A painful experience recounted yesterday, March 26, in the press conference presenting the Everesting Challenge in the Trentino Marketing conference room by Alessandro Colombo and the surgeon Alexander Gardetto, medical director of the Brixsana Clinic, who operated on him in Bressanone.
A surgical operation that was not easy on a health level and moreover linked to heavy psychological implications, which came after an intense period of meetings and discussions – explained Colombo and Gardetto -. Then the sort of promise: if the project reaches a positive conclusion – Alessandro’s voice – I will work to make my experience available to those who are victims of limb accidents”. Hence the idea of Everesting initially planned for last October and then postponed to the beginning of April 2024.
And then here is the action on social media with the hashtag #Tagliatopervivere and the idea of carrying out a sensational action precisely to make known this opportunity not yet foreseen by public health. But on the topic this morning there was a commitment on the political level to delve deeper into the issue relating to the possibility of including such surgical interventions in public health by the former Trentino Health Councilor Segnana and by the current president of the Provincial Council of Trento Claudio Soini, present at the meeting. Nods of greeting came from vice-president Stefania Gerosa, represented by the head of cabinet Luca Farinaro, by the tourism councilor Roberto Failoni and by Marurizio Rossini, managing director of Trentino marketing.
The presentation was attended by, among others, Professor Giulio Sergio Roi (University of Bologna Sports and Exercise Medicine), Mattia Hauser, mayor of Mezzocorona with councilor Matteo, Massimo Bernardoni, president of the Italian Paralympic Committee of Trentino Alto Adige , Giovanni Groff and Livio Guidolin of the Guinness Club 92 of Trento who will follow the feat and Daniele Cappelletti who already holds the absolute Everesting record achieved in Mezzocorona on 19-20 October 2020 with 21,720 meters of altitude overcome in the space of 24 hours. Communication support for the event was guaranteed by the Club of Olympic Journalists of Trentino Alto Adige Suedtirol, represented by Diego Decarli.
As mentioned, Alessandro Colombo will be busy trying to conquer the Paralympic record of vertical difference in 24 hours on path 500 of Monte di Mezzocorona. The dream is to overcome the difference in altitude of 8,848 metres, repeating without interruption the climb from the valley station of the Mezzocorona cable car to the mountain station, and then making the descent with the cable car system. And resume the climb. It is scheduled to start at 11am on Saturday 6 April and conclude at the same time on Sunday 7 April. The logistical structure revolves around the cable car to Mount Mezzocorona, a company chaired by Alois Furlan which will be the cornerstone of the record attempt for 24 hours.
It should be noted that the Saturday afternoon will be cheered up by the Bersaglieri Fanfare of Padua, the recent protagonist of the world record for the Veneto Bersaglieri fanfare relay, involved thanks to Livio Guidolin (Guiness Club 92 Trento).
The company has sporting and social purposes: it wants to combine and support a significant undertaking on a physical level with the moral and psychological values linked to the full functional recovery of people subjected to bodily amputation. This is also thanks to a correct and modern healthcare procedure.
As Alessandro Colombo explains, “in addition to wanting to demonstrate that disability is not necessarily an indication of impossibility, with the April event we aim to disseminate the new surgical and technological possibilities capable of restoring an excellent quality of life to amputee patients”.
