The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reports that Alexandra Föderl-Schmid, the newspaper’s deputy editor-in-chief, has been found by the police in Braunau, Austria. The 53-year-old was hypothermic and was taken to hospital. The editorial team will not comment on the case for the time being “out of consideration for our colleague and her family”.

There had been no official search for missing persons, but German and Austrian authorities confirmed to WELT on Thursday that there was a large-scale search operation in the area.

The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” announced on Monday that Föderl-Schmid was temporarily withdrawing from day-to-day business due to allegations of plagiarism and that an external commission had been commissioned to examine the allegations. The allegations about her handling of sources in her articles arose in December, and the industry service “Media Insider” reported on them. The editor-in-chief had admitted that Föderl-Schmid had handled sources incorrectly.

The national daily newspaper also announced on Monday that Föderl-Schmid had asked the University of Salzburg to review her doctoral thesis, which she submitted in 1996. The background is allegations that arose from a plagiarism check by the communications scientist Stefan Weber. The “Nius” portal, with its most prominent representative Julian Reichelt, is Weber’s client.
