In turbulent times, trade unions, churches and associations want to work for more cohesion. Democracy should be strengthened throughout Germany with education, culture and good infrastructure.

A new nationwide alliance with around fifty participating organizations wants to strengthen democracy in Germany. Under the motto “Together for democracy. In the federal government. On site. For everyone.” the merger started in Berlin. “We want to show that our country is able to defend itself against the extreme right and against the enemies of democracy,” said the chairwoman of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), Yasmin Fahimi.

In addition to the DGB, the two large Christian churches, social and welfare associations, environmental organizations and cultural and sports associations also belong to the newly founded alliance. The association wants to promote sustainable and good education, affordable culture for everyone and strengthen the local infrastructure, as the chairwoman of the “Umbrella Association of Migrant Organizations in East Germany”, Eter Hachmann, said. “We are concerned about our democracy. These are not empty words, but rather the moods and fears that we are aware of.”

The alliance wants to focus on practical and concrete action and offer advice and training, hold cultural and political events and go on a democracy tour with moving stages, said Fahimi. The actions should be implemented with local actors.

“We don’t want to fly in with information from above and put ourselves on the market place, but we want to support those who may be in difficult situations locally.” Even if the alliance operates nationwide, it will start with a focus on the federal states of Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg, says Fahimi. State elections will take place there in the fall.
