Amaia Garantxo’s translation of Miren Agur Meabe’s novel ‘Hezurren retura’ into English has been named the winner by the jury of the ninth edition of the Etxepare – Laboral Kutxa Translation Award. Thus, the translator and the publisher Parthian Books will share the prize of 4,000 euros; and, in addition, they will receive support of up to 2,000 euros to promote the publication under the title ‘Burning Bones’. Meabe was highlighted as “one of the most significant contemporary authors of Basque literature” in the ceremony announcing the decision.
Amaia Gabantxo (Bermeo, 1973) is a writer, flamenco singer and translator specializing in Basque literature. He has done invaluable work as a translator, and thanks to him, ‘Twist’ and ‘Belarraran ahoa’ (Harkaitz Cano), ‘Kristalezko begi bat’ (Miren Agur Meabe), ‘Zorion perfectua’ (Anjel Lertxundi), ‘Vredaman’ ( Unai Elorriaga), ‘Borrokaria’ (Bernado Axaga), ‘Harri eta herri’ and ‘Maldan behera’ (Gabriel Aresti), and today’s awarded ‘Hezurren retura’ (Miren Agur Meabe), among others.

It is not the first time that Gabantxo has won the prize, in 2018 Gabriel Aresti’s ‘Harri eta Herri eta Maldan Behera’. Because he also got it for taking it to English. In this regard, the publishing house Parthian Books has published for the second time a novel by Miren Agur Meabe in English and, in addition, Karmele Jaio’s ‘Amaren kanak’ has also been published.
In this competition created with the aim of awarding the translation of a literary work originally written and published in Basque, the translation of the work and the promotion of the publisher are evaluated. Precisely, the jury highlighted the career of Amaia Gabantxo and her translation work, as well as the potential of the publisher Parthian Books and her interest in Basque literature. “In addition to the translation being of high quality, the importance of it being a translation made directly from Basque into a major language” was emphasized by the jury.
