The Reuters Institute has published its Annual Digital News Report. It focuses on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in information production. If AI can prove to be an asset for newsrooms, it appears here that it can also be a liability, as it increases citizens’ concerns about information.

Generational AI is gradually spreading in newsrooms around the world since ChatGPT emerged at the end of 2022. In this context, one of the challenges for the media that use it will be to gain the trust of consumers.

“Overall, people are afraid of what would happen to the reliability of the content,” said Nic Newman, lead author of the report. The survey shows that they are wary of using AI to create informational content. This would be especially true in relation to material of a political nature.

52% of people surveyed in the United States say they are not comfortable with the information produced by AI. On the other hand, the use of AI to improve journalistic efficiency seems to be much more accepted.

Artificial intelligence can also be used to create and spread false information. A very significant fact in this election year, especially in the United States. 59% of those surveyed would worry about this.
