“The Big Chill” Meets Giant Snakes: Inside Sony’s Unexpected ‘Anaconda’ Reboot

Sony Pictures’ reimagining of Anaconda isn’t your typical reboot; it’s a self-aware action comedy that treats the 1997 cult classic as a film within its own universe. Currently in theaters, the new Anaconda distinguishes itself by embracing meta-humor and nostalgia, a direction spearheaded by director Tom Gormican after pitching a surprisingly specific concept.

The original Anaconda, released in 1997, captivated audiences with its creature feature premise centered on a documentary crew’s perilous journey through the Amazon. Directed by Luis Llosa and starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, Jonathan Hyde, and Owen Wilson, the film followed the crew as they were systematically hunted by a massive anaconda. Despite receiving mixed reviews, Anaconda proved to be a box office success, earning approximately $136.8 million worldwide and achieving “so-bad-it’s-good” status, spawning sequels, a crossover with Lake Placid, and even international remakes.

However, a straightforward continuation wasn’t the path Sony envisioned. Instead, the studio sought a fresh, comedic approach. Gormican revealed to Screen Rant that he and co-writer Kevin Etten initially resisted a conventional reboot. “So we pitched, they brought us Anaconda at Sony, and they said, ‘What about Anaconda? We’re thinking about this.’ And we were like, ‘No, no, no,’” Gormican explained. “And then we went back and said, ‘If you let us do The Big Chill becomes Anaconda, then we’re interested,’ because we thought they would say no. And then they said yes. And we were like, ‘Okay, now we got to figure this out.’”

The resulting film stars Paul Rudd and Jack Black as Griff and Doug, longtime friends grappling with midlife crises who decide to film a low-budget “spiritual sequel” to the snake thriller they adored as children. Their amateur filmmaking endeavor quickly turns dangerous when they encounter a very real, and very angry, anaconda. Steve Zahn and Thank you Newton round out the crew, while Daniela Melchior plays a mysterious guide and Selton Mello appears as a snake handler. Notably, Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube reprise their roles from the original film in meta-cameos that directly acknowledge the 1997 movie.

The film’s unique approach is a deliberate attempt to subvert reboot expectations. As one analyst noted, the studio’s willingness to embrace such a quirky concept demonstrates a growing appetite for self-aware, comedic takes on established franchises.
