Emmy-Winning Actor Andre Braugher Dies at 61

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of Andre Braugher, the Emmy-winning actor known for his roles in “Homicide: Life on The Street” and “Brooklyn 99,” who passed away on Monday at the age of 61.

Braugher’s publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed that the actor died after a brief illness, but no additional details were provided.

The Chicago-born actor gained recognition for his portrayal of Det. Frank Pembleton on “Homicide: Life on The Street,” a police drama that earned critical acclaim during its seven-season run on NBC. Braugher’s standout performance in the role earned him his first career Emmy award in 1998 for lead actor in a drama series.

Following his success on “Homicide,” Braugher transitioned to a very different role as Capt. Ray Holt in the popular comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” which ran for eight seasons from 2013 to 2021. He received four Emmy nominations for his work on the show.

Terry Crews, Braugher’s co-star on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” paid tribute to him on Instagram, expressing his honor to have known and worked with the talented actor.

In addition to his work on television, Braugher also showcased his talent on the big screen, including a role in 1989’s “Glory,” as well as in the 2022 film “She Said.” He had also appeared in notable TV shows such as “Hack” and “The Good Fight.”

A Juilliard graduate, Braugher’s contributions extended to the stage where he appeared in several Shakespearean productions, earning an Obie Award for his performance as the title character in “Henry V.”

Braugher is survived by his wife Ami Brabson, who was his co-star on “Homicide,” as well as his three sons, his brother, and his mother. His presence will be deeply missed by audiences and industry peers alike.
