The semifinals missed, the chances of the WTA finals dwindle: For Angelique Kerber, the tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California, comes to an end with a disappointment.

Mitfavorite Angelique Kerber was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Tennis Masters in Indian Wells. The 33-year-old German was the highest seeded remaining player in the tournament, but on Thursday (local time) she lost to Paula Badosa from Spain after 86 minutes 4-6, 5-7. Kerber’s chances of still making it to the WTA finals are dwindling.

Badosa, who was already in the quarter-finals at the French Open, managed a break in the first set when the score was 4: 4. In the second set, the 23-year-old worked out a 5-2 lead. Kerber found back and equalized, but in the end Badosa got the upper hand.

While Kerber’s dream of another final in California has come to an end, her opponent will face Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the semifinals. The African got the upper hand against Anett Kontaveit from Estonia with 7: 5 and 6: 3. This means that Jabeur will be among the top ten in the world rankings for the first time in the coming week. In the second semifinals, Victoria Asarenka from Belarus and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko face each other.
