Romania is bracing for a shift in weather patterns, with a cold front expected to bring lower temperatures and precipitation, including sleet and snow in the higher mountains, starting Thursday. Elena Mateescu, head of the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), detailed the approaching change, following days of unusually mild conditions.
“These days we are counting on warmer weather than usual, even today and tomorrow, because the range of maximum temperatures across the country will be between 10 and 15-16 degrees,” Mateescu explained, according to reporting from Libertatea. “The highest values are expected in the west and southwest of the country, including in the capital, 14-15 degrees.”
A Brief Respite Before the Chill
The warmer temperatures will be short-lived. Beginning Thursday, maximum temperatures are forecast to drop to 7-9 degrees Celsius in central, eastern, and southeastern Romania. Western and southwestern regions will see slightly milder conditions, remaining closer to the seasonal average of 10-13 degrees Celsius. Despite the drop, Mateescu indicated this colder spell will be brief. By Monday, temperatures are expected to begin rising again, reaching 10-17 degrees Celsius by Tuesday – significantly above the typical temperatures for late March.
Precipitation and Wind Warnings
The cooling trend will be accompanied by precipitation. “Light rain in the lower relief areas, and in the high mountain area we do not rule out precipitation in the form of sleet and snow,” Mateescu stated. A weather alert is also in effect for increasing winds, with gusts of 40-45 km/h in lower areas and 60-80 km/h in the high mountains, as reported by Agrointel.ro.
A yellow code warning for strong winds, with gusts between 50 and 60 km/h, has been issued for the counties of Caraș-Severin, Mehedinți, Dolj and Olt.
Bucharest Weather Outlook
In Bucharest, temperatures will decrease from 14-15 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and 12-14 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, to around 9-10 degrees Celsius starting Thursday. Currently, temperatures in the capital are slightly above the average for this time of year. Tuesday will see variable skies and light to moderate winds, with a high of 14-15 degrees Celsius and a low of 0-2 degrees Celsius, potentially lower in suburban areas.
Wednesday will bring temporarily cloudy skies and moderate winds with slight intensifications, reaching speeds of 40-45 km/h. The high will be 12-14 degrees Celsius, with a low of 2-4 degrees Celsius. Thursday will see decreasing temperatures and overcast skies, with generally moderate winds and a high of 9-10 degrees Celsius.
An information notice is in effect for Bucharest from 10:00 AM on March 17th to 8:00 PM on March 19th, warning of increased wind speeds.
The ANM updated its forecast for the period of March 17th to April 12th on Tuesday, indicating an increased probability of rain on March 18th and again after March 25th. The cooling trend is expected towards the complete of the week, according to Libertatea.
Elena Mateescu’s expertise in agrometeorology has been widely recognized; in 2022, she was awarded the EMS Silver Medal for her lifelong contributions to the field and her leadership within the European meteorological community, as detailed by the European Meteorological Society.
The ANM will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the weather system develops. The next official update from the ANM is expected on Friday, March 21st, providing a more detailed outlook for the weekend and the following week.
