Baluard, the banner founded in 2006 by Girona Anna Bellsolàhas joined forces with the investment company Carpanthia with the aim of consolidating its expansion plan. The investment fund has assumed more than 50% of the capital of the bakery companybut Bellsolà will continue to hold nearly 49% of the shares and will keep her position as product director.

Carpanthia is an investment company with offices in Barcelona and Madrid and headed by Miguel de Lara. The company has bought more than 50% of the company Factoria Baluard in an operation that, as advanced by the economic newspaper Expansión, has combined the purchase and sale of shares with the injection of capital by the fund. Carpanthia focuses its investments on small and medium-sized family businesses with an ebidta of between one and three million, as is the case of Baluard, which in 2021 invoiced close to 6 million euros.

The mutual fund entry will carry a change to the business structure. The new board of directors is chaired by Miguel de Lara and the directors include Anna Bellsolà and Josep Font, who leads the venture capital company Turtle Capital. There is a new addition to the management: ex-member of Mango’s executive committee, Cristina Belil, will be in charge of managing the company and Anna Bellsolà will focus on product quality.

From Girona to Barcelona

Originally from Girona, Baluard settled in Barcelona in 2007 with his first workshop. Thirteen years later, seven more establishments have followed, most of them located in the Eixample, and a new bakery is scheduled to open in November. Beyond its own workshops, it also has three points of sale at the Club del Gourmet in El Corte Inglés.

Family of bakers

Anna Bellsolà is part of the fourth generation of a family of bakers. In 2003 his father, Pere Bellsolà, sold the family company Bellsolà SA, dedicated to the sale of frozen masses for the bakery and pastry shop, to two investment companies: Landon, which owns Almirall laboratories, and Qualitas Equity Partners. In order not to lose the tradition, his brother, Robert Bellsolà, and his wife, Mireia Oliveras, founded the Antiga Casa Bellsolà, which today has eight bakeries in the city of Girona.
