Chennai: Actor and Makkal Neethimayam leader Kamal Haasan has shown Tamil courage in the Jallikattu issue. Kamal announced that Jallikattu competition, which is staged in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, will also be held in Chennai as part of the Pongal celebrations.

“It is my desire to hold Jallikattu in Chennai. In preparation for that. The venue will be announced soon,” Kamal Haasan told reporters after a meeting with party representatives in Chennai on Friday.

Kamal Haasan’s desire is to hold the competition at the Chennai Marina seafront, where there has been a huge uproar for Jallikattu. Preparations will start as soon as permission is obtained from the authorities. Kamal said that the aim is to show the beauty and glory of Jallikattu, a traditional sport of Tamil Nadu, to the city dwellers.

Kamal Haasan was a strong supporter of the Jallikattu agitation in Marina in 2017. He had then asked that if elephants can be raised for purams in Kerala, why not Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu?

In Kerala, many people die from being bitten by intoxicated elephants. Still, the elephant is not stopped. Elephants are kept in the sun for hours. Their ears are deafened by chants and musical instruments. Kamal Haasan had also opined that Kerala and Tamil Nadu should not have two laws.
