Apple Projected to Release Tabletop Robot in 2027

The device, internally codenamed J595 and occasionally referenced by former employees as HomeView Ultra or HomeView Max according to MacRumors, began in 2019 as a video-calling concept before expanding into artificial intelligence integration. According to reporting from Aaron Tilley of The Information, much of the hardware has remained essentially complete for roughly two years, while software development and internal feature debates have kept the project tethered to the lab.

Motorized Display Rotates Fully During Video Calls

The prototype utilizes a nine-inch touchscreen mounted on a mechanical arm capable of full 360-degree rotation, with an overall design that MacRumors noted has been compared to Apple’s old iMac G4 or Pixar’s lamp mascot. Unlike mobile robots that navigate between rooms, this stationary tabletop unit relies on its motorized mount to swivel toward whoever is speaking in the room, keeping participants framed during video calls. Its ability to move in this manner sets it apart from traditional smart displays such as Google’s Nest Hub or Amazon’s Echo Show.

Sensors and cameras give the device environmental awareness, designed to automate household routines or manage interactions. MacRumors noted that the current design for the robot envisions it using a camera and sensors to be fully aware of its environment and act autonomously, allowing it to turn on the lights when someone walks into a room—or perhaps even try to tell a cat to get off a table. The unit is programmed with collision avoidance to maneuver without striking nearby objects. As a central control hub for compatible smart home hardware, the product is anticipated to feature extensive integration with the Apple HomeKit ecosystem.

Why Apple’s First Robot Is Taking So Long

Software Delays Push Back the Hardware Release

While the hardware team has pushed for an active release, the software division has sought additional time for refinement. TechRepublic noted that internal squabbling over features and sluggish software development have delayed the rollout. Over the past year, developers have considered narrowing the initial feature set down primarily to FaceTime and basic home automation tasks.

Mark Gurman reported that the device is expected to run a brand-new operating system dubbed Charismatic, which blends Apple TV and Apple Watch interfaces with a heavy reliance on widgets. Earlier development plans encompassed a more conversational Siri assistant capable of joining open discussions and suggesting recipes or restaurants. Executives including newly minted CEO John Ternus have backed the robotics push, treating the device as a crucial test and a strategic entry into home hardware. Apple says general Siri AI conversations on HomeView do not require an Apple Intelligence-enabled companion device.

High Price Tag Targets Premium Smart Display Market

Apple hopes to market the tabletop robot for around $1,000, though 9to5Mac reported through former employees that final component costs could push that figure higher. Apple reportedly hopes to sell the home robot for around $1,000, which would position it well above conventional smart displays. For comparison, Apple’s stationary HomeView smart display features a 7-inch display, Siri AI, FaceTime, and smart-home controls, starting at $299 in the United States and reaching customers on November 13. Households in search of superior domestic video calling options may find the FaceTime functionality attractive, especially if they favor Apple’s emphasis on privacy over rival ecosystems.

Industry observers point out that the high price will require powerful software capabilities to justify the cost to consumers who already use smartphones for connected home controls. Alongside the tabletop model, MacRumors reported that Apple has explored other robotic concepts, including one that follows users around on wheels, one that flies inside the home, and machines designed to assist with household chores like folding clothes.
