Apple to Trial AI Tools in China After Two-Year Delay

Apple will begin a trial rollout of its Apple Intelligence features in China starting Wednesday, November 4, through an iOS developer beta. The launch follows a two-year delay caused by strict regulatory requirements, with a full public release of the tools scheduled for December alongside iOS 27.3.

The initial release includes approximately 18 new features, though it notably excludes the latest version of the iPhone’s Siri AI assistant.

Alibaba integration powers Chinese AI features

Apple Intelligence FINALLY Lands in China — Powered by Qwen

To meet local requirements, Apple has partnered with Alibaba Group to integrate the Qwen large language model into the ecosystem. This integration allows users to access Qwen’s text and image understanding and content generation capabilities directly within Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence, Global Times reported.

The Visual Intelligence feature can be accessed via camera controls. Within Writing Tools, a Compose with Qwen feature will allow for text and image generation on various topics. Global Times also noted that the integration is opt‑in, allowing users to control when Qwen is used and what information is shared.

Alibaba stated that user requests and generated replies will not be used to train its models. The integration will initially be limited to users in China using compatible devices, such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 and later models, iPhone Air, and iPhone Duo, with the device and Siri languages set to English or Simplified Chinese.

Regulatory hurdles and market concessions

The launch follows a period of regulatory uncertainty in China, where AI service providers must register with internet watchdogs and use local data centres to process data domestically. While Apple secured regulatory approval in July, the company had previously reported training its own LLM specifically for the Chinese market, Reuters reported in August.

Zhang Yi, founder of research firm iiMedia, told AFP that the partnership signifies a structural concession by Apple regarding its pricing and defining power over the AI experience in the Chinese market. Zhang added that the delay in the Chinese rollout was driven by compliance costs rather than lags in research and development.

Ivan Lam, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, said that while the rollout fills a long-standing gap in Apple’s AI offering, it does not necessarily give the company a significant advantage in a crowded market.

Implementation timeline for iOS 27.3

The rollout will follow a specific technical schedule to move from testing to public availability:

  • November 4, 2026: Open beta testing begins for developers via the iOS 27.3 beta.
  • December 2026: Full public release of Apple Intelligence features with the official launch of iOS 27.3.

Currently, the AI features are exclusive to the iPhone. MacRumors reports that support for other platforms, such as Mac or iPad, will only follow once the necessary regulatory approvals are obtained.
