Harriët Jager-Wittenaar will be appointed professor by special appointment of Dietetics and transmural nutritional care at Radboud university medical center and Radboud University on 1 September. Her research focuses on the prevention and treatment of malnutrition in the sick and the elderly. The chair is made possible in part by the Dutch Association of Dieticians. It is the second dietetics chair in the Netherlands, and the first in a university hospital.

The research in the chair focuses on three themes. Harriët Jager-Wittenaar wants more scientific support for dietetic interventions. In addition, she wants to bring about more cooperation between the various professionals. The third theme is transmural nutritional care, from hospital to home.

In recent years, Jager-Wittenaar has conducted research into malnutrition in the elderly and the sick from various angles. She concluded that malnutrition is often noticed very late. There are risk factors for malnutrition, such as fatigue, reduced appetite and swallowing problems, but also social factors such as economic circumstances and the absence of informal care or a social safety net, which can be treated at an early stage.

Harriët Jager-Wittenaar studied Nutrition and Dietetics at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen. From 1997 to 2011 she worked as a dietitian at the University Medical Center Groningen. Here she obtained her PhD in 2010 on research into malnutrition in patients with head and neck cancer. She continues to work part-time as a lecturer at Hanze University Groningen, where she has been affiliated since 2011.
