The Illicit Assets Recovery Agency (Arai) has recently made headlines for its continued efforts to track down ill-gotten assets and suspicious bank accounts. According to Aimé Rasoloharimanana, director general of the agency, nearly four hundred individuals currently find themselves in the crosshairs of the justice system for their alleged involvement in cases of embezzlement, embezzlement of public funds and use of forgery in administrative procedures. such as public procurement.

Assets seized by Arai, mainly from high-ranking officials but also from ordinary citizens, include cars, real estate and even ships. These seizures follow two hundred and twenty-eight decisions issued by the anti-corruption centers of Antananarivo and Mahajanga, of which two hundred and four have already been executed by the agency. The majority of people targeted by these decisions are natural individuals.

Arai’s annual report highlights the progress made since its implementation in 2023, with the establishment of a five-year action plan and the opening of a branch in Mahajanga. New mechanisms have been put in place to strengthen the tracking of illicit assets, and lobbying in favor of the fight against corruption is being developed.

In addition, Arai recently announced that seized illicit assets will be returned to the public treasury. Two auctions have already taken place last year, and the funds raised will be allocated to a specific treasury account to strengthen the means of fighting corruption.

Although these positive results demonstrate Arai’s effectiveness in its mission to dismantle corruption networks, it is clear that the fight against this scourge is an ongoing process that requires sustained commitment. With concrete measures and reinforced political will, the agency continues its mission of holding perpetrators of embezzlement to account and contributing to integrity and transparency in the management of public affairs.
