The show “Hard but Fair” alone lost almost 20 percent of its audience this year. The other public political talk shows such as “Anne Will” also recorded a decline. The broadcasters have identified two reasons for this: the news situation and the competition.

The five political talk shows in the first and second divisions have lost audiences this year. “Anne Will”, “Hart aber fair” and “Maischberger” on ARD had fewer viewers, as did “Maybrit Illner” and “Markus Lanz” on ZDF. ARD and ZDF justified the figures to the Evangelical Press Service (epd) with the news situation and the competitive environment. The broadcasters spoke of “slight declines in viewer numbers”.

The ARD program “Anne Will” remained the political talk with the highest audience on public television. In its farewell year, the format reached an average of almost three million viewers per edition. The market share of the 30 broadcast editions of “Anne Will” averaged 13.1 percent in 2023. The year before there were 3.6 million viewers with a market share of 15.1 percent.

The last issue of “Anne Will” ran on December 3rd after 16 years. The slot on Sunday evening from 9:45 p.m. on Erste will be taken over by the former “Tagesthemen” presenter Caren Miosga, who will start her new talk format on January 21, 2024.

The show “Hard but Fair” with Louis Klamroth averaged 2.1 million viewers and a market share of 8.6 percent in 2023. There were 34 editions in total. In 2022, the talk, then presented by Frank Plasberg, had an average of 2.7 million viewers and a market share of 10.1 percent. As a result, the program broadcast on Monday evenings lost around 20 percent of its TV audience. Klamroth took over the moderation of “Hart aber fair” from Plasberg in January.

“Markus Lanz” also loses viewers

The talk show “Maischberger”, presented by Sandra Maischberger, reached an average of 1.3 million viewers and a market share of 10.7 percent with a total of 54 editions. In the previous year there were 1.5 million viewers and a market share of 11.8 percent for 49 editions. Until April 2022, the format was called “Maischberger. The Week” and ran once a week on Wednesday evenings. Since May 2022, “Maischberger” has also been shown on Tuesday evenings.
