Should you interview AfD politicians? There are different opinions about this. Moderator Caren Miosga thinks so. Unlike Anne Will, she would like to invite party politicians to her new talk show. However, this offer does not apply to all party members.

Presenter Caren Miosga takes over the big political talk show on Erste from Anne Will. Unlike her predecessor, she also wants to speak to AfD politicians. “We are facing elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg. The AfD is in the lead in all three federal states, so we have to invite them,” Miosga told the “Spiegel“.

But she doesn’t want to talk to every politician in the party. “Quite a few of them are masters at building lies. As a moderator, you can’t keep up with checking the statements live.” There are also those in the party “who are so blatantly right-wing extremist that they won’t get an invitation either,” Miosga made clear. “But there is, for example, Germany’s first AfD mayor in Raguhn-Jeßnitz, Saxony-Anhalt, who wanted to abolish daycare fees during the election campaign. As soon as he was responsible, he had to increase the fees. I would like to talk to him about populist promises.”

She and her editorial team are wrestling with the question of how the media should deal with the AfD. “For example, we are discussing the accusation that talk shows offer such parties a stage that makes them bigger. I don’t believe in this argument. I think they don’t need ARD and ZDF. They can find their electorate without us, through social media,” Miosga explained.

The first issue of “Caren Miosga” runs on January 21st on Das Erste. Miosga says she doesn’t want to cause a riot: “We don’t want to occupy the group so that everyone hits each other’s heads. In our opinion, this form of orchestration does not fit into these already turbulent times.”
