Exercise is unquestionably beneficial for a healthy lifestyle. However, a recent study has challenged the belief that walking 10,000 steps a day is a must. The study’s findings demonstrate that fewer steps can still make a significant difference in overall health.

The notion that one must walk 10,000 steps daily to stay healthy is a familiar adage. Whether it’s advocated by fitness influencers, built into pedometer settings, or endorsed by friends and family, most people have come across this recommendation. Depending on the speed, achieving this goal would require roughly 80 to 150 minutes or about eight to nine kilometers in total.

However, a report by the German Press Agency (dpa) and a current study suggest that this target may not be necessary. On August 9th, the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology published a study indicating that around 4,000 steps per day can reduce the general risk of death. Remarkably, the risk of cardiovascular disease even decreases with just under 2,400 steps per day.

Professor Christine Joisten from the Cologne Sports University states that the 10,000-step rule is indeed predictive of success in lowering blood pressure and BMI. However, she also emphasizes that “more exercise is already beneficial to health.”

Interestingly, the origin of the 10,000-step rule is not based on scientific evidence. Instead, it was launched over 50 years ago as part of an advertising campaign by a Japanese pedometer manufacturer. The campaign, known as “Manpo-kei,” claimed that this number of steps reflects a healthy lifestyle without requiring scientific validation.

Exercise, regardless of achieving the 10,000-step threshold, can play a vital role in preventing various diseases. Professor Joisten suggests that physical activity contributes to the prevention of civilization diseases, non-communicable diseases, and their risk factors such as high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. Moreover, regular exercise can help prevent neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s while also promoting overall orthopedic, rheumatological, and mental health.

Incorporating exercise into everyday life, work, and leisure activities can significantly improve the quality of life. Joisten recommends adapting exercise routines to individual health conditions. She suggests activities such as dancing, strength training with rubber bands or light weights, yoga, or gardening.
