As a reminder, last Saturday Russia announced that it was suspending its participation in the agreement that allowed the resumption of grain exports from Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea. An agreement reached through the mediation of Turkey and the United Nations, and in the shadow of the global food crisis. Moscow claimed that the reason was an attack by Ukrainian drones against the Russian navy in the Crimea peninsula, which was annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

Ukraine is among the world’s largest exporters of grains – especially wheat and sunflower oil. The agreement was reached with the goal of securing shipping routes through the war zone in a UN-brokered solution to the global food crisis. Since the deal was reached, 397 ships have safely left Ukraine, exporting about 9 million tons of grain from the war-torn nation.
