Argentina’s main union calls for a general strike for January 24

The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) -the main union of Argentina– has called this Thursday for next January 24, 2024 a general strike to protest against the neoliberal shock plan of the Government of the far-right Javier Milei, the Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU).

The strike will begin at 12:00 noon, local time, until midnight on January 24, and includes a mobilization towards Congress, where one day Beforehand, the Government hopes that the so-called ‘omnibus law’ is approvedanother macro package of measures, which address some issues that are not the responsibility of the DNU.

“The idea is to support and demand politics, which is Parliament, to act in favor of workers and civil societywhich is where one hundred percent of the adjustment happens,” CGT sources have told the newspaper ‘Clarín’.

On Thursday, nearly 30,000 Argentines responded to the call of the CGT and other organizations to protest in the center of Buenos Aires. against the controversial neoliberal plan with which Milei intends to annul and modify at least 300 laws.

The text includes the declaration of the state of public and economic emergency until December 31, 2025, the privatization of public companies, the modification of the labor market, health plans, or the rental law.

The last general strike called by the CGT was that of May 29, 2019, on the eve of the end of the government of former president Mauricio Macri and before the elections that led Casa Rosada to Alberto Fernandez.
