Ariane Toro Secures Bronze at Tokyo Judo Grand Slam

Spain’s Ariane Toro claimed a hard-fought bronze medal in the women’s -52 kilogram category at the prestigious Tokyo Grand Slam of judo this Saturday.

Ariane Toro, a 22-year-old judoka from Navarre, Spain, demonstrated resilience and skill to secure her place on the podium. She achieved this victory by winning a repechage final against Japan’s Kisumi Omori, a formidable opponent who previously won the Paris Grand Slam this year and consistently ranks among the top competitors on the world circuit.

Toro’s path to the bronze wasn’t without challenges. The Spaniard, a continental bronze medalist in both Zagreb and Podgorica over the past two years, faced two penalties – known as ‘shidos’ – which initially put her at a disadvantage. However, she maintained her composure and ultimately secured a crucial point to clinch the win and advance to the medal round.

The journey to the repechage final involved both setbacks and triumphs. Toro initially fell to another Japanese competitor, Nanako Tsubone, but successfully navigated the repechage bracket by defeating South Korean Seyun Jang, earning her another opportunity to compete for a medal.

Looking ahead, attention now shifts to the -70 kilogram competition, where A Tsunoda is scheduled to compete in the second round against the winner of a match between Aina Laura Rasoanaivo of Madagascar and Michaela Polleres of Austria.
