Arista Unveils Network Scalability Breakthroughs with VESPA and AI-Powered AVA

Conventional networking solutions struggle to efficiently manage the forwarding facts required for large numbers of clients. Arista’s new VESPA architecture tackles this challenge head-on,leveraging innovations in VXLAN tunneling and a unique MAC Rewrite offload (MRO) feature. The first component of VESPA involves Arista access points establishing VXLAN tunnels to Arista switches functioning as WLAN Gateways.As devices connect, the system dynamically creates an Ethernet Segment Identifier (ESI), scaling to 30,000 ESI’s across paired switches that provide active/active load sharing for optimal performance and high availability.

These gateway switches utilize Type 2 EVPN NLRI (Network Layer Reachability Information) to learn and share endpoint MAC addresses throughout the network. This architecture allows for the addition of more EVPN WLAN gateways, scaling both access point and user connections to tens of thousands of endpoints.

The core innovation lies in MRO, which distributes the function of managing client forwarding information to the WiFi access points themselves. With MRO, access points handle mobile client ARP requests, building a localized MAC-IP binding table and forwarding client IP addresses to the WLAN gateways using the access point’s MAC address.Consequently, the WLAN Gateways only need to learn a single MAC address for all clients associated with a given access point. This dramatically improves gateway scaling, increasing capacity by a factor of 10 to 100, and enabling cost-effective gateways to support hundreds of thousands of connected clients.
