TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona GymCats are set to celebrate a significant milestone this Saturday, February 21st, as they host West Virginia at McKale Center at ALKEME Arena. The meet isn’t just another competition on the schedule; it marks the 50th anniversary of the Arizona gymnastics program, a testament to decades of dedication, athleticism, and the enduring spirit of collegiate gymnastics. The event is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. MST, promising an afternoon of impressive routines and a heartfelt tribute to the program’s history.
The GymCats enter the competition ranked No. 30 in the Road to Nationals rankings, a position earned through consistent performance and a commitment to improvement. Although the team faced a challenging outing last week, posting a 195.350 at Denver, they are eager to return to their home arena and capitalize on the energy of their fans. Arizona’s individual strengths are evident in the event rankings: No. 27 on Vault, No. 32 on Uneven Bars, No. 39 on Balance Beam, and No. 24 on Floor Exercise. This upcoming meet against West Virginia represents an opportunity to build on these strengths and showcase the team’s progress.
A Blend of Experience and New Talent
The Arizona gymnastics team boasts a unique blend of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers. Fifteen gymnasts return from last season, providing a foundation of experience and leadership. Redshirt senior Elizabeth LaRusso, along with seniors Gianna Lenczner, Sophia Stephens, and Emma Strom, will be instrumental in guiding the younger members of the team. This core group brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of success, setting a high standard for the program.
Alongside the returning gymnasts, six newcomers have joined the ranks this season, injecting fresh energy and talent into the team. Sadie Smith, a transfer student, adds valuable experience, while Elle Bragga, Riley Carman, Delaney Mead, Hillary Puleo, and Lily Tisdale represent the future of Arizona gymnastics. The integration of these new faces promises to elevate the team’s overall performance and create a dynamic competitive environment.
Coaching Excellence and Sizeable 12 Recognition
Leading the GymCats is head coach John Court, who is embarking on his eighth year at the helm and his 28th year overall with the program. Court’s leadership was recognized last season when he was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year, a testament to his ability to cultivate talent and foster a winning culture. He is supported by associate head coach Kylie Kratchwell, in her fourth year, and Arizona alumna Shelby Martinez, in her second year. Kratchwell and Martinez were both honored as WCGA Regional Assistant Coaches of the Year last season, highlighting the strength and depth of the coaching staff.
The team’s talent has as well been recognized on a conference level, with two GymCats selected to the Big 12 Preseason Gymnastics Team. Junior Abby Martin earned preseason honors on vault and beam and was a unanimous selection to the all-around team. Senior Emma Strom was a unanimous selection to the preseason floor team, demonstrating the team’s strength across multiple events. Martin’s consistent performance, including a career-high all-around score of 39.450 against BYU, and Strom’s impressive floor routines, which included a career-best 9.925 against Air Force, position them as key contributors for the GymCats this season.
