Arizona Swelters Under Record-Breaking December Heat Wave
Table of Contents
A historic warm spell is gripping Arizona and the broader Southwest, shattering December temperature records and raising concerns about the region’s changing climate. Temperatures are soaring to levels more typical of late spring, wiht Phoenix nearing daily highs and Flagstaff already matching a record set decades ago.
Arizona is no stranger to intense heat, but experiencing it in December is a stark anomaly. The unseasonable warmth, impacting areas from the deserts to the high country, is being driven by a persistent high-pressure system.
Phoenix Flirts with Record Highs
Phoenix is currently experiencing temperatures in the low 80s, putting the city on the verge of surpassing daily high records. According to a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, “This is a result of an anomalously strong high-pressure system over us.It’s keeping us warm.” Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has already recorded temperatures approaching record territory, with Sunday, Dec. 14,presenting the greatest opportunity to tie or break existing records.
The anticipated cooldown next week will be minimal. “We will start to decrease by a couple degrees next week, but it doesn’t look like we’re going to get back to near normal anytime soon,” the meteorologist added. The broader western United States is similarly affected by the high-pressure ridge, resulting in warmer and drier conditions than usual.
Flagstaff rewriting the Record Books
Further north, the impact is even more pronounced. Flagstaff tied a daily record on Thursday, Dec. 11, reaching 68 degrees – a temperature last seen in 1950.Another record is possible on Friday, Dec. 12, with forecasts predicting a high of 64 degrees, possibly exceeding that mark.
“There is potential to reach another record high today, 64 degrees, and it’s very possible that it can exceed that,” stated a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Flagstaff. Current forecasts place Flagstaff approximately 10 to 20 degrees above average for this time of year, effectively eliminating any chance of snowfall. While other northern Arizona communities like Payson, Prescott, and Camp Verde are also experiencing the warmth, Flagstaff is currently the primary location poised to break records. “In terms of cities in northern Arizona, the only one that we’re seeing the potential of reaching a record is Flagstaff as of right now,but it might potentially be close in some other cities,” the meteorologist noted.
The Cause and Duration of the Warmth
A strong and slow-moving area of high pressure is dominating the weather pattern across the Southwest. This system suppresses storm activity, maintains clear skies, and allows daytime temperatures to climb significantly. “The high pressure is keeping it dry for us. We don’t really expect much in the way of precipitation,” explained the Flagstaff-based meteorologist.
While forecast models suggest a pattern shift near Christmas that could bring cooler air and, potentially,a white Christmas. For now, though, Arizona’s December feels distinctly like March.
