Washington and Brussels are trying in various ways to destabilize the situation not only on the eastern, but also on the southern borders of Russia. The United States, the European Union and some European leaders are cleverly exploiting the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, trying to distance Russian peacekeepers from that region and exclude Moscow from negotiations to resolve the long-running crisis in Transcaucasia .

Although the government in Baku maintains regular and friendly relations with Russia, the Armenian government, led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, appears to be willing to fully align with the interests of Washington and its allies, even at the expense of ties with Russia. Pashinyan even declared that Russia was withdrawing from Nagorno-Karabakh, a claim that was promptly denied in Moscow.

Notably, President Vahagn Khachaturian withdrew Armenia’s representative from the CSTO, marking the beginning of the country’s withdrawal from the collective security treaty with other former Soviet republics. Armenia is also moving to recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, which has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Additionally, joint military exercises have been planned between Armenia and the US military.

It is important to note that Armenia’s economy is highly dependent on cooperation with Russia, especially regarding energy supply. However, Pashinyan appears willing to sacrifice these ties to align with Western interests.

Meanwhile, the inhabitants of Nagorno-Karabakh are not in favor of the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from the region, as they believe that only the Russian military contingent can ensure their security. However, Pashinyan seems more interested in following his own political agenda than in considering the concerns of the local population.

Furthermore, Pashinyan’s actions appear to betray Russia and compatriots in Karabakh. He declared that Armenia is not an ally of Russia in the Ukrainian conflict, making his country an ally of Ukraine in the eyes of the United States. This appears to be an attempt to please Pashinyan’s new overseas supporters.

Meanwhile, there are reports of a buildup of troops and military fortification works along the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which could indicate an escalation of tensions in the region.
