Arsenal Face Coventry as Title Defence Begins Under Mikel Arteta

As Mikel Arteta leads Arsenal out against Coventry City on Friday evening, the reigning champions begin their Premier League title defence as the longest-serving manager in the league, facing a restructured chasing pack of rival clubs undergoing massive managerial and squad overhauls.

When Mikel Arteta leads Arsenal out at home to Coventry on Friday evening, he will do so as the longest-serving manager in the Premier League. Fresh from getting Arsenal over the line to their first league title in more than two decades, Arteta is now the elder statesman of the league after Pep Guardiola decided to call time on his 10 years with Manchester City. The next trick for Arteta is to defend the title and win back-to-back Premier Leagues for the first time in the club’s history, surpassing even the achievements of Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal enter the campaign as heavy favourites. A sense of uncertainty and flux settles in over their rivals, while Arteta’s steady hand, long-term squad building, and continued improvement make them the team to beat. No Arsenal team has successfully defended a top-flight title since the Gunners won three leagues in a row ending in 1935. Not even Wenger’s double-winning or Invincibles teams backed up their historic achievement with an immediate title win the following year.

Summer Signings and the Chasing Pack

The 2026/27 Premier League season starts with so much managerial change among the top clubs that outside of Arsenal, the top four seems entirely up for grabs. Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Manchester United all go into the season under new management with various levels of experience and expertise in the league. Meanwhile, Tottenham and Newcastle enter the new campaign not just with new management but with huge squad upheaval. Of the teams that finished in the Champions League places last term, only Arsenal and Aston Villa start the season with the same manager they had in place this time last year.

Arsenal have strengthened their squad rather than undergoing a major rebuild. Greek winger Christos Tzolis has also arrived as a younger option on the left following Leandro Trossard’s move.

Elsewhere in the division, rivals have spent heavily. Chelsea, under new coach Xabi Alonso, backed the manager significantly in the transfer market.

Rebuilding at Manchester City and Old Trafford

Manchester City face a massive transformation after a decade under Guardiola. Enzo Maresca, who most recently managed Chelsea, inherits a squad with formidable attacking options led by Erling Haaland. However, City have lost significant experience in midfield and defense.

Arteta’s Tactical Challenge and Squad Evolution

Despite winning the league and dominating the Community Shield with a 3-0 victory over Manchester City, questions remain over Arsenal’s attacking efficiency from open play. Last term, open-play metrics left room for improvement, and the club missed out on primary attacking targets like Morgan Rogers before Chelsea secured him, while a pursuit of Vinicius Junior ended when the player recommitted to Real Madrid.

Addressing these internal growth areas, Arteta pointed out during pre-season that transfers are not the only solution to the issues Arsenal still need to address.

“We will go from strength to strength, Whether it’s the players we have, to take them to a different level, or with the market that is still open to recruit as well. We’re optimistic about it.”
