the heaviest sentence for the group of rioters. I am ashamed for my actions

Enrique Tarrio was the head of the Proud Boys, the group of Donald Trump loyalists who were among the first to raid Congress on Jan. 6, 2021. After his conviction in May for seditious conspiracy, Judge Timothy Kelly on Tuesday in Washington convicted him to 22 years in prison. the most severe sentence among the 500 sentences to prison or house arrest for the events of that day.

For the judge, he is the leader of the conspiracy. Tarrio thus explained to Corriere a famous sentence by Trump directed at the Proud Boys during a presidential debate: Stand back means relax, wait until after the elections. Stand by: stay by my side. And we’ve done it since day one. It was December 2020, Tarrio tore a Black Lives Matter flag from a church by setting it on fire during a procession, and for this he was banned from Washington; he followed the assault on Congress from Baltimore, but he cheered on his comrades via text messages and social media.

On Tuesday, the 39-year-old defendant with a shaved head, long black beard and orange prison overalls expressed remorse for the storming of Congress (A national shame), acknowledged Trump’s defeat in 2020 and claimed he already doubted it in december, he apologized, said he changed. His mother and sister in tears begged the judge not to sentence him to 33 years as requested by the prosecutor due to the aggravating circumstance of an act of terrorism, recognized by the judge.

The defense had asked for a stop at 15 years, less than the verdicts of two leaders present during the assault: Stewart Rhodes of the Oath Keepers militia, and Ethan Nordean who led the Proud Boys in Tarrio’s absence. The defense called the latter a keyboard ninja denying that he planned the assault or ever had any real control of the group. But Judge Kelly, who was appointed by Trump, said Tarrio’s absence does not justify him at all, suggesting that he may have thought he was giving himself an alibi as he from a distance incited his deputies to lead an attack on American democratic tradition. On Friday Dominic Pezzola, a member of the Proud Boys who was the first to storm Congress using a police shield, raised his fist after his 10-year sentence proclaiming: Trump has won. Tarrio instead accused the former president, who also invited him to the White House, of having pushed followers to fight against the stolen election, but something that was not proven in court.
