Former King’s School Student Missing After Beach Incident in NSW

A search is underway for Astin Gerstl, an 18-year-old and former student of The King’s School, who went missing Sunday after encountering difficulties while swimming at Little Bay Beach, Arakoon, on the NSW Mid North Coast.

The King’s School confirmed Tuesday that Gerstl was a member of the graduating class of 2025. The school is providing support to the family and students while respecting their privacy during this challenging time.

Search Efforts Hampered by Conditions

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers initiated a search on Tuesday, but were forced to suspend operations later in the day due to rapidly deteriorating conditions. According to NSW Police Inspector Peter Walton, the coastline in the area is “very treacherous,” posing significant challenges to rescue personnel.

“We’ve got highly skilled police divers, water police operators that are trained in these conditions, but obviously, they need to operate safely,” a senior official stated.

School Offers Support

The King’s School has made support services available to both current students and recent graduates. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this profoundly difficult time,” said acting headmaster Stephen Edwards in a statement. The school remains in close contact with the family, offering ongoing assistance.

The circumstances surrounding Gerstl’s disappearance remain under investigation. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and will resume search efforts when it is safe to do so.
