Nate Pearson Signs with Houston Astros, Gets Opportunity as a Starter

A former top prospect will look to revitalize his career in Houston. Righty pitcher Nate Pearson has agreed to a one-year, $1.35 million contract with the Houston Astros, as reported by Chandler Rome of The Athletic on Friday.

A New Chapter for the Former Blue Jays Prospect

The Astros intend to utilize Pearson as a starting pitcher, a significant shift after he spent the majority of his Major League Baseball career in a relief role. This change in approach could be pivotal for the 29-year-old, offering him a fresh start and a chance to showcase his potential.

Recent Performance and Cubs Release

Pearson’s 2025 season with the Cubs was marked by inconsistency at the major league level. He appeared in 11 games, pitching a total of 14.2 innings with a concerning 9.20 ERA and a 2.182 WHIP, recording only seven strikeouts. However, he demonstrated promising form in Triple-A with the Iowa Cubs, logging 44.2 innings across 38 appearances with a 2.22 ERA, 1.142 WHIP, and 57 strikeouts. Despite this success, the Cubs released him near the end of the regular season.

From Highly Touted Prospect to Trade Asset

Originally selected 28th overall in the first round of the 2017 amateur draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, Pearson quickly ascended through their farm system. Before the 2020 season, Baseball America ranked him as the seventh-best prospect in all of baseball. Unfortunately, he struggled to consistently translate that potential into major league success. After four seasons navigating between the majors and minors with the Blue Jays, he was traded to the Cubs in July 2024 in exchange for minor-league players Yohendrick Pinango and Josh Rivera.

This move to the Astros represents a critical juncture in Pearson’s career, offering a new organization and a defined role as a starter – a chance to finally fulfill the promise that once made him one of baseball’s most exciting young arms.
